Yogananda Seva (YSO) is a new opportunity, never before offered in this way in the 100-year history of Self-Realization Fellowship, for lay disciples of Paramahansa Yogananda to offer their unique skills and experience to further their Guru’s work no matter their location or circumstance. This international community of SRF and YSS members, dedicated to the ideal of guru-seva – service to the Guru – has three missions: (1) to provide opportunities for lay disciples to enrich their spiritual lives and sense of community by the sacred practice of guru-seva. (2) to directly support the work of SRF/YSS; (3) to develop new programs that engage and serve lay disciples around the world.
How does it work?
Yogananda Seva serves to create a global network of lay disciples who can work together to serve and support our Guru’s work of SRF/YSS. Many willing hearts and hands are needed to grow this endeavor. Thankfully, by using the latest digital technologies, people from all around the world can join together to serve without ever leaving their homes. The online Volunteer Portal is another powerful tool to serve SRF/YSS goals. It enables devotees to list their particular skills, talents and interests, as well as to find and work with others across the world through a project board that presents a growing variety of fields of service.
FAQs about YSO
Is YSO part of SRF?
YSO is a separate but affiliated organization, with its own board, financing, etc. Although it exists independently of SRF, it is answerable in every respect to the Guru’s society.
How does YSO get funding?
Yogananda Seva does not receive funding from SRF because it is a legally and financially separate nonprofit corporation that is entirely funded through charitable contributions made by SRF/YSS members and friends.
Yogananda Seva Monthly Sustainers, those supporters who choose to make a monthly recurring donation, particularly help Yogananda Seva in this formative stage. By knowing in advance what our monthly income will be, we can more efficiently develop and manage budgets. This high level of certainty helps us to run the organization more efficiently.
Brother Chidananda envisioned Yogananda Seva to be completely self-sufficient financially. To achieve that vision requires many devotees joining together to sustain our collective service to SRF/YSS.
How do I participate in YSO?
Devotion, skills you already have, and the desire to serve our Guru are the only “requirements” to participate. There is no YSO membership.
How does YSO enrich my spiritual life?
The spirit of YSO is seva bhav — a shared state of love and humility through acts of selfless service. Disciples of Paramahansa Yogananda experience an ever-deepening joy and fellowship as they dedicate their knowledge, skills, and devotion to serving the Guru’s mission.
How much time is required?
Participants determine their own commitment of time and energy. They are encouraged to plan and maintain a comfortable balance between YSO and other activities.
If I have a project I want to work on, can I bring it to YSO?
Participants are encouraged to initiate work ideas, and to tailor their work as they continue.
How do I find others to work with?
The Volunteer Portal is designed to facilitate devotees of similar interests and capabilities in finding and engaging with each other, locally or across the world.
What does YSO stand for?
YoganandaSeva.org – YSO is an acronym we use for this nonprofit that helps distinguish Yogananda Seva from Yogoda Satsanga Society of India (YSS).
